The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) has served as the Federal Republic of Germany’s constitution since 1949, and embodies the fundamental principles of the country’s law. The Basic Law also sets out the fundamental rights, which take precedence over all other laws. The inviolability of human dignity, human rights and the freedom of the individual are fundamental principles of the Basic Law.
