Hindu groups in Kanpur held a protest against Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya who has made some unsavoury remarks against the Hindu epic Ramcharitmanas written by Tulsidas. Maurya has called the Ramcharitmanas anti-Dalit and anti-women and this has led to some of his supporters during the holy book. Hindu groups say the row over Ramcharitmanas has been ignited to divide the Hindus along caste lines so that the Opposition can get electoral advantage. They also say that Maurya’s criticism of the Ramacharitmanas is based upon misplaced understanding of the epic.
