This week Stan from Watershed Watch toured Clayoquot Sound open-net salmon farms with Dan and Bonny from @Clayoquot Action and @Skookum John from the Ahousaht Nation. This very place marked a fish farm that was stopped by Skookum John and other protectors several years ago. It was spectacular to be on the water with these ocean protectors. In celebration of World Ocean Day today, please take a moment to send an email to the federal government to put ocean protection on the front burner and get f ▶0:04・

Goodbye. Good riddance. B.C. Premier David Eby says factory fish farms have to go. The premier was asked about open net-pen salmon farms after an investigation by Watershed Watch and Clayoquot Action found a huge spike in the number of wild fish being killed at the farms. "In British Columbia, we know that those have to move into closed containment systems, the industry knows they have to move in that direction, the federal government knows they have to move in that direction," Eby said. *salmon ▶57:41・

Last Friday we visited the viewing platform at Port Coquitlam's Hyde Creek and found a dry creekbed with a couple salmon carcasses. We headed downstream about a kilometre to see what conditions were like. Fortunately, there was water, likely because a couple creeks feed into Hyde Creek in that stretch. We observed several salmon in a deep pool. B.C. is still experiencing the effects of this summer's severe drought and this is making it more difficult for salmon to spawn. Stan from Watershed Watch came across this disconcerting scene while camping on Nootka Island. It appears this wild adult salmonid was ravaged by parasitic lice. We all know parasites from salmon farms can decimate juvenile wild salmon but is that what is happening here with this adult? Grieg Seafoods operates a bunch of factory salmon farms in this region, with three just up the channel. Factory fish farms can elevate parasitic lice levels for 30 kilometres! Salmon sure are resilient!
